Depression Risk Higher in Bipolar Patients With Low Cortisol

depressionIn a recent article in Science World Report, researchers found that depression risk is higher in individuals with low cortisol levels.

Cortisol, otherwise known as the “stress hormone”, is something that can wreak havoc on some, especially when it is too high.

However in some people, when their levels are too low, depression can be a result.

“In bipolar depression the stress system is often activated, which means that the affected individuals have elevated cortisol levels in the blood.

We have now been able to show that both over- and underactivity in the stress system, with corresponding elevated or reduced cortisol levels, can impair mental health in terms of depression and poor quality of life in these patients,” said Martin Maripuu, a PhD student at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Psychiatry Unit Umeå University and physician at the psychiatric clinic, Östersund Hospital, in a news release.”

The study that researchers conducted included 145 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and 145 control subjects. They found that moderately elevated cortisol levels in the bipolar patients decreased their risk of depression and lower levels of cortisol increased the odds.

What this can mean is that we are all bio-individual and that a tailor made health program would be fitting.
